PIGEON LAKE, ALBERTA
September 10, 11, 12 2002
Pigeon lake is a catch and release walleye fishery that was stocked in 1998 & 1999 with over 600,000 walleye. We fished the lake during mid-day on the 11 & 12 catching an average of 7 walleye per hour per fisherman. 1/4 ounce leadhead jigs tipped with frozen minnows in 18 to 20 feet of water produced the best action during our stay. The water in the lake had a fairly limited visibility which could explain the effectiveness of our new Lime Chartreuse "Tournament Glow" in these depths. I had come with a lot of large worms which also produced good fishing action but I seemed to feed a lot more fish than I caught. Sizes ran from the 1 1/2 pound range up to the 6 pound range with around 10% to 15% of the fish over 4 pounds and at least 50% more over 2 1/2 pounds. I was lucky enough to catch 5 fish in a row that were over 5 pounds in less than 30 minutes on Sept. 11th. We also had four people fishing from the boat on the 11th. and had several triple headers going during the afternoon. Of over 200 walleye that we caught and released during our visit only one had a small loonie sized growth on it's front fin and a second a crooked spine which certainly didn't affect its fight. All the fish we caught were well colored and healthy and I certainly look forward to returning to fish Pigeon lake again. Several other species were caught during this trip including Pike (2), Perch (10) and Burbot (2) however I am sure these numbers would have risen had we been targeting these species.
The purpose of this trip was to test out our new Lime Chartreuse "Tournament Glow" jig paint and I am very pleased with the results! The new glow crystals do take longer to charge (approx. 15 minutes of full sun) but once charged they really perform. They will glow for hours!!! We found that the bite was slow until we put down fully charged jigs. Once we had charged jigs in the water, we easily caught more fish than any boats in the vicinity. We tried to work with one rod out and charging while the second rod was busy catching fish. I ended up running a 30 to 45 minute cycle on each rod, there was no real planning to this but it's the way that it worked out for me (if I didn't catch a fish in around 10 minutes down went a charged jig). As you can see in the pictures below, we were catching nice fish during the middle of the day, flat water and very small ripples, we didn't have to wait for the witching hour.
Our "Tournament Glow" is available in Lime Chartreuse and Lemon Chartreuse. I look forward to the ice fishing season as this product will definitely have a wide range of uses then.
Our "Tournament Glow" fires up very well under fluorescent lighting and bright sunlight, ultraviolet light (black light) charges the glow quickly. Highly charged jigs will glow for hours!!!
