Spinner rigs are used behind bottom walkers (bottom bouncers) to quickly find and catch fish. Bait is often placed on the hooks for extra attraction, but many fish can be caught without using bait in most northern lakes. Trolling spinner rigs in unfamiliar waters is a quick way to locate fish that may then be jigged or cast to with other lures, or simply keep trolling back through the area with spinner blades as long as you're catching fish each pass. Minnows, earthworms or leeches are the common baits used behind spinner blades.
Spinner baits have weighted hooks, so bottom walkers are not needed to keep them in the strike zone. The double bladed spinner blades create a lot of sound/vibration in stained water situations.
