This book tells of the adventures of Manuel Raber who joined the RCAF
as a gunner in September 1941. He enlisted in Calgary and trained in
Edmonton, Claresholm, Saskatoon and Dafoe prior to shipping via Halifax
to the UK. He flew on missions in both Halifax and Wellington aircraft
and was shot down November 24, 1942. He parachuted to safety over
Belgium and was harboured by the Belgian underground prior to
being captured. The Germans interned Manny in Stalag Luft 3 from March
1943 until the Russians captured his lager in March 1945. He and others
then made the long trek to Belgium prior to returning to the UK. In May
1945 Manny shipped from the UK in the Louis Pasteur and made his way to
Calgary where he was discharged in September 1945 prior to returning
home to Medicine Hat.
A German POW camp was no place for a Jewish boy from Medicine Hat.
When he was wounded and with the Belgian underground a Roman Catholic
priest gave Manny a Rosary as a good luck charm if nothing else. Under
German interrogation he was asked repeatedly about his faith. He said he
insisted he was an atheist but the Germans concluded he was Roman
Catholic after finding the rosary. After that Raber said he attended
Catholic services every Sunday!
Sixty years later as interest increases regarding 'What did you do in
the war Daddy or Granpa?', you will find this tale to be a fascinating
glimpse into not only the RCAF Bomber Command but life on the run with
the underground and seeking to survive life in a POW camp in Nazi
Germany.
